BeadFest – these are the people in my neighborhood

My first Beadfest as an exhibitor has come and gone. It was most definitely worth the days spend firing and glazing in a frenzy! I had a wonderful time – seeing my pieces well received, meeting new friends, catching up with old friends. And I managed to fit in a little shopping and a bit of barter (tomorrow’s post). For now – a recap of the booth, and a few of my neighbors. I regret not taking more people pictures…I seem to have focused on the beads.

The show was great, although long hours on one’s feet. The atmosphere was very invigorating, and creative. I am thrilled to be part of this community; I am very glad I took the leap and applied. Although it seems very quiet here at home, alone – I am full of ideas and energy – so thank you friends!

FaerieCon m.a.g.i.c – A is for art and artists

When I was  middle school art teacher I used to show the movie “Labyrinth” to my 6th grade students. I wanted to impress upon them that there were people out there, working, and creating incredible art. That art can be a lucrative job… Just look at the film with only 2 humans and all creatures! Never did I think that I would meet, let alone go to events with Brian and Wendy Froud – the designers of said magical creatures in the movie. My original copy of “Faeries” by Brian Froud and Alan Lee is dog-eared to say the least…

FaerieCon is a gathering of all creative peoples, from far and wide. There are painters, famous and up and coming. THere are artists whose work you recognize in major retail stores, and comic book shops. There are artists with work on tote bags, calendars and tee shirts. There are sculptors and metalsmiths and designers and artisans. There are featured artists and artists vending thier artwork.

I am happy to be an artist exhibiting my work with the likes of:

Brian Froud

Brian Froud – “Gwenhwyfar”

Wendy Froud

Amy Brown

Amy Brown – “Restless Thoughts”

Brigid Ashwood

Brigid Ashwood – “The Locust Queen”

Ravenscroft

Linda Ravenscroft -” Maiden Spring and Jack in the Green”

Star Weils

Jane Star Weils – “Dryad Sister”

Charles Vess

Charles Vess – “Faery Processional”

Nelson Reed

Helena Nelson Reed – “Lady of the Wildwood”

* This list – almost exclusively 2d artists does not in any way slight my fellow sculptors out there!

* All works are copyright of the artist. Many are watermarked to prevent copying. If you like their work, support them and the arts – buy a print! You won’t regret it!

FaerieCon m.a.g.i.c – M is for mermaid

Once a year I get to leave the world behind and cross over into the land of FaerieCon. I won’t return aged 100 years, it is safe to partake of food and drink, but I will see glorious wonders and frolic with friends, old and new, and my gypsy faerie family. (I am not exagerating, although I may be accused of waxing poetic.) Until you have experienced an event such as this, you will have to take my word, suspend your disbelief, and read on…

Where else can a dryad frolic with a mermaid? While djinn stroll past, and satyrs lounge, strumming a banjo? Where artists share epic feats of imagination and skill; where authors read words that transport you further away from the mundane world;  and where music can spiral around you in ethereal tendrils?

This past weekend – we arrived Thursday, settled in, noshed on sushi… Met up with friends for laughter and libations – the uber talented artists Brigid Ashwood and Jane Star Weils, and storyteller/creative genius Mark Lewis. This night alone thrilled me no end – sharing wine and witty conversation with artists whose work I admire, very nourishing and inspiring to my creative soul…

We set up Friday morning…

JDR table

Tiles, a few shrines, and my dryad sculpture reigning over all the mixed media jewels. I was thrilled to have as my neighbors – my friend Sarah of Toadstools n treestump, and Mermaid Melissa!

Mermaid Melissa

The iPhone picture really doesn’t do her justice – the carpet colors are overpowering the variations of sheen and hue in her – rather long – tail!

Mermaid Melissa, hailing originally from Florida has worked professionally as a marine animal trainer, pearl diver, and currently as a professional mermaid. She is charming, personable, and a self professed “kid magnet” as we witnessed through out the weekend. At FaerieCon she was representing Fae magazine, and their new publication Mermaids and Mythology magazine, for whom she writes a column. Her website is filled with stunning photos and even more breathtaking videos.  Saturday afternoon, like wild fire, a phrase rarely heard raced around the lobby: “There’s a mermaid in the pool!” Even those of us that had seen Melissa swim on Friday, joined in… how often do you get to exclaim that to others?

Mermaid in the pool!

Mermaid2

And let me share Mermaid Melissa’s message here: Save the world’s oceans before all creatures become mythical!

Please check out her site. You wont regret it. Until tomorrow – when I bring you Day 2 of the “Five days of FaerieCon m.a.g.i.c…

Bethany. Beach. Boardwalk. Beautiful…

Bethany1

The day dawned cloudy and a little hazy, but that did not last long. I had a great spot on the boards, at the top of the main drag in town.

Bethany2

The dunes and the beach as my backdrop!

For this show I was in the “Mixed Media” category. So my jewelry display had to be limited, just ceramic components. But they were very popular…

I never wear hats. Thank heavens I had borrowed an umbrella from Betsy!!!

reunion

Pleaseant surprise! Kim was a student of mine whose Grandparents live in Bethany. I was thrilled to see her, to catch up and to meet…

Jack

Jack! (And her husband, of course!)

Sorry this was rather brief. This is a big week. Today is my birthday, and I had a productive studio day – mixed media collages are in progress for this weekend at Artsfest. Tomorrow I have to finish earrings for a blog swap, and the infamous Bead Soup! Bead Soup posts will go up on Saturday – stay tuned!

Holiday weekend: shows, summer, beach, neighbors…and water ice

Shadey view

This was my view a week ago – Saturday July 2nd, to be exact. I cant believe a week has gone by already! Yikes! Last Saturday was the St. Peter’s Fine Art Show in Lewes, DE. It is one of my regular shows, that I enjoy, and this weekend was even more perfect – the weather cooperated! Take a look at that sky…

St Petes view 2

There’s a shot of my street. Honestly – it was such a nice day, smooth at set up, sunny, and don’t forget the water ice. Its a St Peter’s tradition for me. That afternoon lull, when you are feeling a little sleepy… It was great to see familiar faces, and to meet and chat with new customers!

St Petes

One beautiful little incident: a woman was very drawn to a ceramic pendant – a crescent moon and star. She initiated the stealth buy; it was for her daughter, who was going to catch up with her any moment. Yet in the brief time we shared – she told me her daughter was adopted, and she had said to her from the beginning to the present – “I love you to the moon and stars.” She wanted her daughter to have the pendant, as she was away at school, majoring in art. It means quite a bit to me, when people are moved by the work I do – even something as simple as a pendant. And that she felt compelled to share that with me, inviting me into her trust in our short interaction together. Thank you !

mer tiles

My new tile: the split tailed mermaid made her debut at the show. She is a confident mermaid, a bit sassy. I quite like her!

St Petes view

I did stroll my block – sadly I wasn’t able to take a stroll through the whole show… But I met some wonderful neighbors!

(Speaking of block… block printing!) I had to meet Jennifer of Home Sweet after a customer shopping in my booth raved!!! about her block printed fabrics – even unwrapping and showing off her purchases. And I couldn’t agree more. Gorgeous work, bold, colorful, great design, great craftsmanship.

Scraps of fabric in a bowl… you mean I can have one?! Like a treasure! And a very green business card as well! You can find her at her site and on Etsy

Off the Wall

There you see the lovely and charming Peri of Off the Wall Art. I couldn’t ask for a better neighbor as we explored the Square up credit card services for the first time. ( Review: quick, easy, generally brilliant. Stylus recommended.) Her work is very creative, very fun. Colorful, whimsical, and heartfelt; it draws you in with a strong sense of “joie de vivre”.  Wonderful sayings – not overly sweet, but endearing and sincere, and often punny. The two cards below show you what I mean: “Be who you arrrghh!” (Piratical words of advice!) “We all laugh in the same language” I just love them! Check out her site – great work for kids, or the inner child in all of us.

Off the Wall art cards

It has been a busy week – we stayed at the beach to visit the ocean, and enjoy the Fourth…unpacking after the show, Oops, caught a summer cold, clean the house… and get ready for the second session of clay camp starting tomorrow! Did spend a few quality hours in the studio yesterday. Stay tuned to see the results! It wont take a week before I post again, promise!

Catching up… and creative undertakings

Where did last week go? I lost a few days in a pollen induced haze of headaches and general lethargy. It is amazing how fantastic “Normal” feels after running  on depleted energy stores. SO last week-  no posts. Oops.

This week – there is a lot going on. Meeting today with the amazing M. Carol Mauer to finalize our plans for a ceramic finger labyrinth class. Should be wonderful. More on that ASAP. (It will be soon, in Wilmington, DE)

Last week recieved the foundation for a fantastic journey that I will be undertaking over the next year.

Sketchbook

The Sketchbook Project – artists from around the world sent a slim paperback sketchbook. Choose a theme, and create! The completed books will be exhibited in Brooklyn, San Francisco, Austin, among others – with corresponding exhibits overseas in Melbourne and London! At the exhibits the books are out to be seen, read, examined.  All of them. I am thrilled. I selected “Encyclopedia of…” as my theme. I am thinking Goddesses – of course! I am glad they are coming to Philly so I can see the show – and hopefully my sister will see it in Austin! I need to get planning… Perhaps an A to Z of goddesses… There is still time to sign up if you are interested.

And glazing. And weeding. And enameling. Let me post this now, and i will tell you more later – promise!

A to Z: D is for destination… ( and delay – apparently)

1
: the purpose for which something is destined
2
: an act of appointing, setting aside for a purpose, or predetermining
3
: a place to which one is journeying or to which something is sent <kept their destination secret>
4
: a place worthy of travel or an extended visit —often used attributively

“Destination” really seems like a normal mundane word at first. A word we use frequently, and know very clearly its meaning. But look deeper, if you will. Destiny. Fate. Journeys. Travel. Those words are more intriguing, alive with possibility. And so this entry comes to you from my destination, a place I find well worth traveling to… The Mythic Faire.

I like my life. Quite a lot in fact. I work doing what I love, I have amazing family and friends far away, and friends close by. House, pets… But twice a year, I have a chance to leave the mundane world behind and enter the Realm. FaerieCon and RenCon – The Mythic Faire create a world out of time. a place of magic and creativity and mystery and lore. You have heard me talk on them before. I find them soul refreshing. When you find yourself surrounded by hundreds of kindred spirits for a weekend – the energy is phenomenal! Talking of art, music, myth, magic, lore, legend… all the things that inspire me and fuel my artwork.

It begins today. It nice to have found my tribe.
March 22nd – And it was a great weekend… albeit over a week ago! It was a whirlwind, and wonderful. Let me finally wrap this up with a few high points of my weekend:
SJ tucker Siren, songstress, petite pixie of a bard – SJ Tucker. Got to hear part of her set Friday night, and finally got to meet her and chat in person. The new cd “Mischief” is amazing, naturally.
Cucina Aurora My friend Dawn of Cucina Aurora. (Sorry you cant see my ears in that picture…) Great to see her again, and catch up…
Grimassi and Taylor Raven Grimassi and Stephanie Taylor.  It was lovely to meet them, and yes, that is John Matthews peeking out in the background…
But I would say, as always the most inspirational is meeting and talking with fellow artists. Although my medium is so very different from theirs, I have found amazing kindred spirits!
Please take a look, and enjoy!
