Fall festivals and festivities

“…season of mists and mellow fruitfulness…

Keats said it well in his “To Autumn”. Those words embody September in my mind, and in my artistic life.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
  Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
  With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
  And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

Summer – what a whirlwind! I adore September, its my favorite time of year. Windows open, fresh crisp air, a cup of coffee, and time in the studio. September for me is a respite from teaching, and a round of arts festivals: travel, scenic drives, friends, and great customers.

BF 2014 detail

The picture above was from my exhibitor’s table at Beadfest Philadelphia this past August. My third year vending and my first teaching: a smashing success. One of the highlights as always was the camaraderie of my fellow artists and designers, especially my team mates at the Art Jewelry Elements blog! (If you are interested in pictures of my student work and my Beadfest loot, they can be found here. )

Art journal WIP  AJ2 Wip

In some ways September feels like a new start, a clean slate. Is it the residual timing of the back to school schedule from my years teaching? Whatever the reason – I am starting anew at an art journal. Nothing formal, it will be just for me to doodle, sketch, paint, collage. I have a sketchbook filled with notes and planning sketches, of course. This is more for play, for journaling thoughts visually… I am trying to leave one table set up as a place to work. It helps to keep things out, to have water ready for waterolors. To steal a moment here and there. I am trying to do a two page spread each week.

BoC 2014 swap

The Beads of Courage charm swap and auction is the undertaking of Jennifer Cameron of Glass Addictions. Participants create and swap art beads/charms. Surplus charms are auctioned off to raise funds for  Beads of Courage. This organization provides “innovative, arts-in-medicine supportive care programs for children coping with serious illness, their families and the health care providers who care for them.” I have signed up to contribute 2 charms to the swap. This year’s theme is “Soar” and I have plans to donate an additional piece to the auction on November 14th.

That’s all for now!

Off to pack and prepare and fire the kiln one last time.

Upcoming shows:

Artsfest at Annmarie Garden – September 20-21st. Dowell MD 10-5pm daily.

Art on the Avenue – October 6th. Alexandria VA. 10-6pm

Whirlwind….

November was a whirlwind.

It started with a trip to Faerieland, aka FaerieCon

Faces of FC 2013

Needless to say fun was had, friends old and new, revelries, magic…

Then there was a two week period of custom orders and teaching. Whew. Glad to be getting caught up…

And now its Thanskgiving, Black Friday sales – and more importantly the last few shows of the season! If you are inthe area – I would love to see you at:

The Arden Holiday Shoppe – a great local show, small and very “homey”! In the town of Arden DE (north of Wilmington.)

The DCCA Alternatives Holiday Craft Show – new to me – this annual show hosted by the DE Center of Contemporary Art shuld be stellar! In WIlmongton, at the River front…

And I will have a few special season items at The Palette and the Page in Elkton MD.

Holiday offerings

Whew.

Have a great Thanksgiving, one and all! You will hear more from me in the near future. I CAN see the light at the end of the tunnel…

Entries and exhibitions – DCCA

Today I have a few loose ends to tie up before heading to the studio. The deadline for the DCCA Altrenatives Holiday market/show is today! Time has flown… luckily I can deliver this in person. I am submitting a sampling of sculptural and wearable pieces – all perfect for gifting and collecting.

Chelsea Monday

“Chelsea Monday” – copper, brass, lens, antique paper, image transfer, wool, gems.

Homeland/heritage

“Heritage” – copper, antique key, resin, antique paper, image transfer, map, micro fasteners, gems.

Buddha shrine

“Buddha Shrine” – stoneware, Buddha netsuke, shell, mica, pewter twig. App *” x 5″ x 2″.

Selkie's Shrine

“Selkie’s Shrine” – stoneware, artist’s book ( includes suede, paper, image and text) shell, egg case, bottle, sand, bookcloth, beads. App. 9″ x 6″ x 3″.

Catching up…and puppies!

Its been a week of catching up. The house was a bit out of control – I needed to neaten and organize as much as clean. Laundry, groceries, restock after the fridge died… And get back to the studio! I have a collaborative piece freatured on my now blog with Cooky Schock Coast 2 Coast Creative. ( And you could win it… Go take a look!) I also have a very exciting piece on the table for tomorrrow’s History Blog hop...

Until then a look back. Last weekend was Art on the Avenue in Alexandria; my last arts festival of the year. (FaerieCon not included!)

Old friends

Great to see Jaime and Christina!

New friends

I know its blurry. Marina kept dancing in her stroller.

Display 1

Lovely to be able to bring shrines, tiles and jewelry – to show my cohesive body of work!

My set up

The overal set up…

Ganesh and Buddha

Ganesh and Buddha…

New collars Old collar

On the left: the purchase of the day. On the right: the old and new collars.

Thrilled to find Persnickety Pup again! These are the best collars ever, well made, gorgeous, and so sturdy. The worn collar – is 4 years old! Daily wear, rough and tumble! And yes – I bought the same pattern. I loved it. They have a great selection, and are really helpful in sizing…I recommend them.

Zoey fashion plate

Zoey in her new collar. Oscar loves his simple tribal design, but refused to be interviewed for this post.

Autumn

And I got to meet Autumn! The new furry kid at my friend Beth’s house. This show gives us a mini reunion, and we had so much fun!

Alright. More coffee, off to the studio, I have polymer to cure!  Yes – I said polymer. Stay tuned!

Impressions of September…

Its hard to believe this weekend is the Equinox, and Fall will officially be here. September has passed in a blur of events and shows. Let me share a few images with you…

Beach feet

Bethany TIme

Rehoboth classic

The Bethany Beach Boardwalk Festival, September 8th, was a day of extremes. We had perfect weather, simply idyllic the day before, and the day after. I awoke to thunder, we set up under a dry yet cloudy sky. The morning brought torrential rains, the afternoon strong gusts. But the setting is lovely, sales were good – considering. And it was still a good day! And nothing beats a bonus beach day for a trip to Rehoboth. Nicola’s anyone?

Next I was headed to southern Maryland to Artsfest at Annmarie Garden and a few long awaited reunions…

Bay Bridge. Blue Sky

Art camping

Art camping at its finest.

Into the woods

What a backdrop!

Hoffman reunion

The Hoffman sisters – it is thrilling and so satisfying to see my students grown up. What gorgeous women these two have become!

Robison reunion

And another artist/teacher reunion: 2 teachers and one student – ten years has it been? Like no time has passed, and yet so great to catch up!

I do have more to post from Artsfest – a few fabulous ceramic artists I met, but that will wait til next week. I am headed to ArtBLiss tomorrow for a weekend of R&R! And inspiration, and camaraderie, and fun, and polymer, and beads, and wine, and laughter…..

Lingering Summer, approaching Autumn

me at Beadfest

For so many years this was my back to school part of the year. Now its the back to the studio time – after teaching Ceramics camps over the summer – time to design and create new work for the upcoming Fall season.

The month of August was all about Beadfest Philadelphia! Glazing, firing, preparing, and finally exhibiting at my first bead show. It was a fantastic time and a success! That’s me pictured at my Beadfest table. But it may be partly to blame for the complete lack of a Summer newsletter…

So while it still feels like summer, I have Fall on my mind. Fall festivals and events, fun and frolic. This update is going to be brief – out of necessity as I head to the beach tonight for a show this weekend…

Bethany Beach Boardwalk Festival – THIS SATURDAY  (September 8th) in town on Garfield Parkway and the Boardwalk. I will be on the boardwalk between Parkwood and Hollywood Sts.  The show runs from 10-5, and I find this to be my favorite time of year at the beach . There is also a Silent Auction to benefit area schools. Their site: http://web.bethany-fenwick.org/events

Artsfest at Annmarie Garden – Next weekend! (Sept. 15 -16th) Imagine it – dappled sunlight through a canopy of trees, music drifting in on the wind… artists galore… Its a lovely setting and a great show! Their link: http://www.annmariegarden.org/annmarie2/content/artsfest-2010

The following weekend I have some “me” time planned. ArtBliss is an art retreat held outside DC, in Dulles VA. In its third year, it hosts art, mainly jewelry themed, workshops by nationally acclaimed instructors. I look forward to being inspired, experimenting in polymer ( a new/old medium for me) and catching up with friends! ( Find out more at: www.artblissworkshops.com)

Mermaid tile and pendant

The final Fall show of the trilogy: Art on the Avenue – Saturday October 6th in DelRay/Alexandria VA. This to me – is a “Welcome Autumn” show as there are pumpkins, kids building wacky floppy scarecrows… you name it. Great music, tasty food – and the festival is huge! Definitely time to do Holiday shopping! Their list of artists: http://www.artontheavenue.org

On a different note I have a series of workshops that I am offering this Fall at The Art Studio. It is located in Wilmington DE, and houses “my” ceramic studio. My classes will be a mix of jewelry and ceramics, projects and techniques – suitable for all experience levels.  I will send a more detailed list next week, as time allows. You can check them out if you are interested: http://www2.nccde.org/artstudio/default.aspx

Until then – sorry I have to run! Fall is my favorite time of year! I am looking forward to sweaters & jeans, crisp breezes, creating new work, and all that Autumn brings! Enjoy!

Beadfest or Bust!

Beadfest or Bust

In case you were wondering wher I had been – I have been in the “glaze cave” as I afffectionately call the basement studio. I have been glazeing all day every day and firing the kiln daily as well. All in preparation for my first national bead show. Its a convention really. Beadfest, Heard of it? It is August 17-19 at the Greater Philly Expo Center (actually in King of Prussia). Classes, demos, book signings, and a huge retail sales area. Bead mecca. Bead porn.

And I will be there at #454 in Artisan’s Alley.

A group of my fellow beaders/designers… and I decided to host a sale in all of our shops. Because there’s nothing else going in my life this week, right? (wink, wink). Please take a look and support the artists in their endeavors if you are so inclined! We appreciate it!

Happy Shopping!

A few my favorite things… Artists work from Spoutwood

At Spoutwood Faerie festival – there are so many talented makers, artists, craftspeople, performers, artisans… there is no way I could give you an overview. Let me give you a series of pictures to highlight a few of my favorites, my friends and neighbors…

Gorgeous parasols…

Parasols

Butterfly Bones – resin at its finest, many organic materials. Stellar display! (Shop here.)

Butterfly BOnes

Wing and Talon Leather – I was glad to get to meet and hang out with Donovan, my neighbor. He is a gifted artist, and makes the most exquisite masks. All by hand, hand tooled, hand painted, no assistants – his vision, his creativity. Those barrettes made me want to grow my hair long. Seriously. ( Shop here.)

Wing and Talon

Wing and Talon barrettes

Echo and Wild Jewelry – Confession – I own MANY of Jeannie’s pieces. I tend to purchase a new one each year at the MD Rennaissance Festival. I have been acquiring them for years… Over the last few years we have become friends as well. Her vision and her spiritual outlook mirror mine, she works in sterling, I work in clay…

Echo and Wild

Echo and Wild fairies

Molly Stanton of Elven Elysium. Its polymer. Look again, believe me. Gems, cabochon set, beaded stands, dangle… Molly is a gifted sculptress; you should see her figurative work!

Elven Elysium

Elven Elysium 2

Dancing Pig Pottery – another artist who I know from attending the MD Rennaissance Festival – I got to meet Virginia at Wicked Faire in February. Isnt it ironic that the potters always get along famoulsy, even when doing work as varied as hers and mine?  I now have a fantastic mug of hers for my morning coffee! ( shop here.)

DP detail

Like I said – just a few, a little eye candy for you! These artists are all creating their work themselves, 100% hand made. In the days of collectives, and corporate entities disguised as handmade artist/craftspeople – its nice to support the real deal! (That last comment refers to a recent Etsy scandal…)

Snippets from Spoutwood – or a glimpse into Faerieland…

Looking for the One Crayon Color Blog hop? Click here!

I was away this past weekend. To a show in rural Pa, and to FaerieLand…

setting up

It all starts with lifting and toting, travel and chores…

tent view

But with this view from my tent – with every glimpse the mundane Muggle world slips a bit futher away…

stream

You catch a hint of movement from the corner of your eye. Simply the stream gurgling along, or was it a small fae flitting by? A goblin amidst the greens?

glitter fae

The Maypole rises amidst the trees of Spoutwood Farm

MayPole

bunny

And magic awaits in every nook and cranny…

Four legged creatures show their true colors:

Fairy pup

Pixie dog

Spread your wings – as the Fae come from near and far to play today.

Twig

( Above photo – Twig! The ever charming celebrity fae ambassador. )

Stay tuned tomorrow – a few of my favorite things!!

Retail therapy

Saturday was a day of retail therapy and fabulous friends – old and new. I went to the Berks Bead Bazaar with my friend Marsha (Marsha Neal Studio) and her daughter Chloe – bead babe in training! I stated emphatically in the car ” I don’t NEED anything…” but was very much looking forward to lunch with friends and a bit of eye candy…

First stop: Lisa Peters Art

Lisa Peters1

Stoneware, cabochons, buttons Oh my!

Lisa Peters2

I met Lisa – what is it now? – 4 years ago at the Moravian Tile Festival – through Marsha. We three had a great time, and I have counted Lisa a friend since! She is a generous, creative, funny, fabulous woman who makes exquisite one of a kind ceramic creations. Why – you ask – do I need to buy ceramic cabochons since I make them myself? They are attractive, inspiring, different… Every truly creative clay person makes pieces so unique, stamped with their personality – I need all the more because I love clay so much…

Next up – catching up with Diana P. of Suburban Girl Studio ( back to her later) and finally meeting Staci from Staci Louise Originals

Silly. Silks.

Staci Smith at her booth

Staci’s booth display was gorgeous!( As is her polymer.) She works on PMC, bronze clay, and polymer. I especially like the crackle finish pieces. They had an air of antiquity I liked:

crackle polymer

We had an epic lunch with Sandra Miller and Mary Hubbard & Molly Hubbard and Kristie Roeder and Melinda Orr  and Diana P. – service was slow, but we were talking and talking and didnt notice – except that there was a bit of shopping to be done…

bead babes

(L to R: Melinda Orr, Lisa Peters Russ, Marsha Minutella, me, and sleepy Chloe)

But I said I didnt need anything… I was very restrained, let me show you the loot:

loot1

2 Stoneware cabs from Lisa Peters Art. Strands of green garnet, amazonite and aqua terra jasper.

loot2

And thinking of Spoutwood Faerie Festival, I wanted some cabs to tab set. (wrote them down, cant remember…) That bronze moon face by Staci might be mine to keep!

And I did get one more bit of bead loot recently! I said I would tell you more about Diana of Suburban Girl studio? Well, I am a member of her first annual design team. She is going to give us challenges – seasonally – to create an original piece using one of her ceramic components. This Spring challenge includes a lampwork bead from Jan at Molten Mayhem (also a design team member). I think the palette is very “Spring” but a bit out of my comfort zone. Well, it IS called a challenge.. I definitely have some ideas percolating in my head. I will keep you posted!
