This piece was a breakthrough in polymer and mixed media for me. Fabricating a polymer base, with an Ogham inscription, to inset a lens… under that lens rests sand and amber from Skagen, Denmark. The copper overlayrevealing and concealing the treaure, as well as unifying the composition.

These polymer shrines represent my new work with polymer and investigating the differences inherent in this clay as compared to earthenware or stoneware. They provide an opportunity to add inclusions to the piece during construction. The painting opportunities play on my past periods where painting was a focus.

I have adored the Pre-Raphaelie painters ever since i first saw Holman Hunt’s “The Lady of Shalot”. John William Waterhouse was a later colleague of the PRB, and often associated with their group. Here his images are paired with text, hand stamped on the “porthole” of the pendant. A Victorian era remembrance? And Art History homage? Yes.

I like to participate in “blog hops”. When friends in the online jewelry world issue a creative challenge, I find this a time to experiment and leave my comfort zone as I am not creating a piece for a show or a gallery specifically. This was a travel themed challenge. I chose Germany as it is part of my heritage that often is ignored due to my strong affinity with my Celtic side. ( And yes, the Celtic roots extend to Germany as well…

“Milagros” are small votive offerings left in prayer and supplication. In Spanish the word means “miracle” and they are often left to pray for healing. These eye milagros were a powerful image and I have paired them with inspirational words.
They are hand pressed, and individually painted in a combination of glaze and underglaze. Paired with gems, they make a simple yet powerful amulet to wear. $35
